Yesterday I talked about wedding gown bargains, but what could be more economical than a wedding dress made from toilet paper? The reused wedding dresses from yesterday are obviously much more environmentally friendly, but toilet paper wedding dresses are nothing to turn your nose up at anymore. Now, when you hear “toilet paper wedding dress,” you probably think of beautiful creations like this from someone’s bridal shower:
But would you believe that these dresses are also made from toilet paper? There is an amazing amount of detail and I can’t get over the fact that these dresses are made out of toilet paper. There’s really only one thing I think to use toilet paper for!
Cheap Chic Weddings hosts an annual toilet paper dress contest that brings in many submissions you would swear were made from fabric. And not only are they made from toilet paper, the only other materials entrants could use to construct their creations was tape and/or glue.
The following dress, designed by Katrina Chalifoux, was the winner from last year’s competition.
Cashmere, Canada’s best-selling toilet paper, or bathroom tissue, as they seem to prefer being called, premiered a collection of BT (aka bathroom tissue), Couture with their White Cashmere Collection 2007. In the hands of professionals, toilet paper can look like this (and with a little sewing rather than tape and glue):
The White Cashmere Collection 2008 outshone the previous year. Some of these dresses are simply amazing.
This year, for the first time, Cashmere held the Cashmere Design Contest, which was open to the general public. The winning design, by Toronto resident Carol Ching, is made up of 66 rolls of Cashmere “bathroom tissue” and took 90 days to complete. (She spent more than 100 hours creating the dress!) The prize? A trip for two to New York Fashion Week this Fall. I guess so that she can get inspired for next year’s competition.
I can’t wait to see what designers will send down the runway this September when the White Cashmere Collection 2009 debuts. The new collection will feature 15 top Canadian designers and their vision of Fashion with Compassion in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
And, if you are so inspired by these dresses and have the extra time and plenty of toilet paper handy, perhaps you can design your own couture toilet paper wedding dress. The Cheap Chic Weddings 2009 Wedding Dress competition doesn’t end until June 5th. So you have until then to create your masterpieces. Now, the only question that remains is will you choose Charmin or Cottonelle?
